Luther to host College Night for area high school students and parents

Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents will have an opportunity to talk about post-high school education opportunities with representatives of more than 80 higher education institutions on Monday evening, Sept. 21, at Luther College.

Luther will host a free College Night from 6-8 p.m. in the main gymnasium of the college’s Regents Center, located on the lower campus. The college invites all students and families interested in information about post-high school education options. Luther College receives $62,300 grant for flood berm improvements

Luther College has been awarded a $62,300 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to raise, stabilize and repair the flood control berm located on the lower campus of Luther College.

Luther leases 130 acres to Emergency Watershed Protection Program

Luther College has been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service to lease 130 acres into the Emergency Watershed Protection Program- Floodplain Easements.

By entering the EWP-FPE program, Luther has agreed to permanently lease the 130 acres to the NRCS, promising to restore the native habitat of the bottomland and never develop or utilize the ground for cropland. The Two Faces of Capitalism

Paul Solman, business and economics correspondent for the PBS Television program “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer,” will present the Luther College Distinguished Lecture Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Luther College Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Solman’s lecture, “The Two Faces of Capitalism: Why We Love and Hate the So Called Free Market,” is open to the public with no charge for admission. Jane Hawley, M.F.A., Luther College associate professor of dance, was featured in the “Lifetime Learning” section of the May 2009 edition of Dance Magazine, a magazine for professional and aspiring dancers.

Nichols named Celebration Iowa Program Director at Luther College

Luther College President Richard Torgerson has named Benjamin “Benji” Nichols to the position of program director of the Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band summer music education and performance program.

Luther College will offer weekly German language classes to Decorah area students in grades 2-5 during the college’s fall semester.
