Luther College receives REAP funds for wind turbine project

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tom Vilsack, U.S. Agriculture Secretary, has announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program will award Luther College Wind Energy Project, LLC, a $500,000 grant and a $1,302,385 loan to fund the installation of a 1.65 MW wind turbine that is expected to generate about one-third of the electrical energy consumed by the college each year.

The REAP funds awarded to the Luther wind turbine project are part of the program’s $62.5 million in loans and grants for 705 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in 45 states and Puerto Rico. Luther’s Sampson Hoffland Laboratories Awarded Prestigious LEEDS Gold Certification

Luther College has received a gold certification from the internationally recognized Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building certification system in recognition of the environmentally friendly design and construction features incorporated in the college’s recently completed Sampson Hoffland Laboratories project.

Sampson Hoffland Laboratories is one of only eight LEED’s gold certified buildings in Iowa, and Luther is one of only three Iowa college’s to receive a gold certification. Read more: http://publicinformation.luther.edu/2009-10/october/misc/leedcertification.html

Luther College alumna Hoa Nguyen faces deportation

Hoa Nguyen, a 2003 alumna of Luther, is fighting a legal battle against deportation because of a clerical error in her graduate student visa status. She and her husband, Dan Hanson ’03, ask the Luther community for their help in this.

Hoa, who has an outstanding academic record is a summa cum laude graduate from both Luther and the University of Minnesota, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, speaks three languages, holds a masters degree in French Literature, teaches undergraduates at the U of M, and is a loving wife, sister, daughter and friend. Luther to host book signings with alumni Rob Severson and Dick Edwards

Luther College Book Shop will host book signing sessions with alumni Rob Severson, Class of 1969, and Dick Edwards, Class of 1964, Saturday, Oct. 3 as part of Luther Homecoming 2009.

Severson, author of “Connecting Peace, Purpose & Prosperity: A Survival Guide & Memoir,” will be in the Luther Book Shop from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Edwards, author of “Mom, Dad…Can We Talk? Luther theatre/dance department to present ‘Waiting for Godot’

The Luther College theatre/dance department will present seven performances of “Waiting for Godot,” a play by Samuel Becket, Oct. 2-10.

Football team Germany tour 2010

Luther faculty, staff, parents and friends of the college are invited to join the Norse Football Team on a trip to Germany in May 2010.

Larry Logeman ’87, purchased Executive Express, the St. Cloud, Minn., based airport shuttle, delivery and transportation services company, in early 2005. Logeman then purchased Twin City Passenger service, a second airport shuttle company based in Alexandria, Minn., in 2006. Logeman expanded the company by opening a new branch in Ames, Iowa.

In mid-August Executive Express transported more than 300 international students to Iowa State University from the Des Moines International Airport composing its first Iowa passengers. The company will provide daily services up to nine times a day; 365 days a year for more than 25 cities across central Iowa. Service will be provided to many cities along I-35 from Ankeny to Clear Lake and Mason City. A launch of the company’s new and innovated website will be used as an online reservations system for customers to make reservations and view schedules. Eboo Patel, founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core of Chicago, has released a brief video production praising Luther College as a model community where all people are treated with dignity.
