Luther College to host first Oneota Film Festival

Luther College will be the site of the first Oneota Film Festival, Jan. 22-23, as the college hosts the showing of several nationally and internationally acclaimed sustainability-themed films as the focal point of a community discussion of local sustainability issues including food, energy, economies and life choices.

Festival organizers say films under consideration for the festival include “Food, Inc.,” “The Garden,” “The Seed Hunter,” “American Outrage,” “The Story of Stuff” and “FLOW,” all of which have won recognition for their perspective on sustainability topics. There will also be showings of films about adventure sports, ecotourism films, comedies, shorts, and some locally produced films. Luther Professor Todd Pedlar receives $135,000 NSF research grant

Todd Pedlar, Ph.D., Luther College assistant professor of physics, has received a three-year National Science Foundation grant for $135,000 to support his research in elementary particle physics.

The grant will fund research activities in the study of heavy quarkonia under the NSF’s Research at Undergraduate Institutions program. The funding enables continued research at Luther as part of the ongoing work of the CLEO-c Collaboration, a sub-atomic research collaboration of roughly 100 physicists whose work is based at the Cornell University Laboratory for Elementary-Particle Physics. ‘Christmas at Luther’ concert set created by artist Sand Anderson

Luther College has commissioned artist Robyn Sand Anderson to create the set for the college’s nationally acclaimed “Christmas at Luther” concert for 2009.

Sand Anderson, a Luther alumna whose studio is in New Ulm, Minn., has designed the backdrop for the Center for Faith and Life concert hall where five performances of “Christmas at Luther” will be presented Dec. 3-6. Call for papers put out for Midwest Black History Conference at Luther

Luther College has issued a call for papers for the seventh annual Midwest Black History Conference to be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010.

Roger Thurow, Wall Street Journal reporter and co-author of “Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an age of Plenty,” will serve as the keynote speaker when Luther College hosts The Global Poverty Conference of the Upper Midwest region on Saturday, Nov. 21. Luther Theatre/Dance to present ‘Good Person of Setzuan’

The Luther College theatre/dance department will present six performances of “The Good Person of Setzuan,” a blend of song, dance and theatre, Nov. 13-21.
