Luther College social work program receives two grants to enhance program’s teaching of gerontology

The Luther College social work program has received two grants from the John A Hartford Foundation through the Council on Social Work Education’s Gero-Ed Center to enhance the program’s teaching of gerontology.

The first grant, $5,000 over a three-year period, was coordinated by Britt Rhodes, Luther assistant professor of social work. It provides for faculty development and will involve infusing content on aging into social work courses, connecting seniors in the community to the social work program and classes, and involving students in aging-related projects. Colin Farbotko ’00, a web designer and avid triathlete, lives in Minneapolis with his wife, two cats, five bikes, three pairs of cross country skis and a truckload of running shoes.

Farbotko is also living with monomelic amyotrphy. Farbotko says MMA is basically like having ALS in his left arm from the neck down. His motor neurons die so he can’t use his muscles, as a result his muscles atrophy down to nothing. There’s no sensory loss, so he can still feel heat, cold and pain.

Despite having MMA, Farbotko continues to train and compete in triathlons, and is determined to find a way to cross country ski one-handed and mountain bike without falling off too much. There will not be a Luther News this week, but I did want to give you a quick update on flood efforts.

Yesterday morning, June 25, a couple hundred Luther faculty, staff, students and friends of the college met to "de-sandbag" the Regent's Center. Working together, the group dismantled the sandbag wall in about 90-minutes. President Torgerson assisted, and thanked the group for showing what the Luther community is all about.

A few photos from the de-sandbagging efforts: http://publicinformation.luther.edu/200809/floodimages.html

Thanks for reading-more next week!
